Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Elite-compatible keypad and intercom replacement parts across Los Angeles, with most repairs running $245 – $485 installed including the part and labor. Same-day service is available in most LA neighborhoods when we have your part on the truck, which we usually do for common Elite SL-3000 and EL-25 series units. You’ll know yours failed the moment the gate stops answering the keypad entirely, or when the intercom crackles but won’t release the gate. That silence is usually a dead keypad membrane or a corroded intercom circuit board.
Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite has made a few distinct keypad and intercom lines over the years, and the part you need depends on which one your gate is running. The SL-3000 and SL-2000 swing gate operators commonly pair with the Elite EL-25 hardwired keypad or the EK-PB wireless keypad. Older installations across Los Angeles still run the discontinued EL-16 keypad, which uses a 4-wire connection rather than the newer 3-wire setup. Before you order anything, open the keypad housing and check the label inside – the model number is printed on a small white sticker, usually near the terminal strip. Matching that exactly matters more than it does on some other brands, because Elite changed their wire protocol between generations on the EL-16 and EL-25. An EL-25 keypad wired into an EL-16 harness will light up but won’t trigger the gate. We’d rather identify the part by that label than by look alone. Aftermarket equivalents from brands like Sentex and GTO are available and cost less, but we’ve seen too many of them fail in direct sun within eighteen months. For Elite, we typically recommend OEM or OEM-grade parts, especially on the intercom side where the audio circuit is picky about impedance.
Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Keypad lights up but the gate ignores every code. The membrane contacts inside the keypad have worn through or the terminal connection to the control board has corroded. Elite openers rely on a constant low-voltage loop, and any break in that loop kills the signal before it reaches the board.
- Intermittent opening, worse in the morning. Morning dew seeps into the keypad housing through a cracked gasket, and the moisture shorts the contacts. Once the sun burns it off, the gate works again. We see this constantly in coastal LA neighborhoods like Playa del Rey and Marina del Rey.
- Intercom audio is weak, scratchy, or one-way. The speaker cone in the intercom unit degrades with heat and UV exposure. On a west-facing gate post in the San Fernando Valley, that speaker can cook inside three summers.
- The gate opens but won’t close from the keypad, or vice versa. A failing relay on the keypad’s output side can lose one direction while holding the other. This gets misdiagnosed as a board problem often, but it’s usually the keypad itself.
- Buttons require multiple hard presses. Carbon pads on the underside of Elite keypad buttons wear down over time, and the silicone membrane stretches. You end up mashing the button seven times, which only accelerates the damage.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, expect to pay between $245 and $485 installed for most Elite keypad and intercom repairs. A straightforward keypad replacement with a standard EL-25 runs $245 – $325. Intercom replacement runs $350 – $485 because the part costs more and the mounting often requires drilling a new faceplate into stucco or wrought iron. If both the keypad and intercom failed together – which happens after a power surge – you’re looking at $495 – $650 as a package. Every price includes the part, wiring verification, programming the new unit to your gate, and testing the full open/close cycle. The number Nico Alvarez gives you before any work starts is the number on the invoice. We don’t do discovery pricing, and we don’t add a “drive time” line item. Every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the new part fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things before calling. Confirm the keypad’s power light still comes on. Try the code from your garage-side keypad if you have one. Look for visible water inside the lens or a cracked rubber gasket around the housing. That tells you a lot. But beyond that, the work involves low-voltage wiring that runs through the gate’s hinge area and along the fence line, where a loose splice or a pinched wire can create problems you won’t find without a multimeter and some patience. A cross-wired keypad can also damage the control board, which turns a $300 fix into a $900 one. If you’re not certain which side of the terminal is which, this is one to hand off. Call (903) 417-0793 and we’ll tell you over the phone what it’s likely to be and what it’ll cost.
FAQs
In Los Angeles, expect 4 – 7 years from a hardwired Elite keypad and 3 – 5 years from an intercom unit before heat, UV exposure, and moisture start causing problems. Coastal properties see failures sooner due to salt air, and the Inland Empire’s summer heat shortens lifespan on units mounted in direct sun. We’ve replaced keypads that were still working at year eight, but those were almost always under a covered entryway with no direct weather exposure.
We repair a small number of Elite keypad failures – mostly corroded terminals, broken wire connections at the keypad, and moisture intrusion that hasn’t yet damaged the board. But once the membrane is worn, the buttons are unresponsive, or the circuit board is damaged, replacement is cheaper and more reliable than a repair that may fail again in six months. We’ll always tell you if the repair route makes sense before we quote a replacement.
Most keypad replacements take 45 – 75 minutes from start to finish including programming and testing. Intercom replacements run 90 minutes to two hours depending on the mounting surface and whether the existing wiring can be reused. We carry the common Elite parts on our trucks, so in most cases the job is done in one visit the same day you call.
Yes. Our service trucks in Los Angeles carry the common Elite EL-25 and EL-16 keypad models, EK-PB wireless keypads, and intercom replacement units for the SL series openers. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls for multi-brand gates. If your Elite unit takes a less common part, we’ll have it ordered and installed within a few business days – either way, you’ll know the timeline before we start.
Call (903) 417-0793 for a free estimate over the phone. Tell us what your Elite keypad or intercom is doing, and we’ll tell you what it’ll cost to fix it, before you commit to anything.
