Franchise FAQ
Calder Gate Repair grew out of a simple frustration: gate repair was too often a guessing game for homeowners. We built a model around written prices, tracked arrivals, and a promise we put in writing on every job. These answers walk through what owning a Calder location actually looks like.
Common Questions
Do I need gate repair experience to open a Calder location?
No. You need the willingness to learn the trade and run a service business, not a decade on the tools. Calder trains franchise owners and their first technicians on nine major gate opener brands, including LiftMaster, FAAC, BFT, Linear, Viking, Ghost Controls, DoorKing, Elite, and Mighty Mule. Many of our owners come from sales, operations, or general contracting backgrounds. What matters more is whether you’re comfortable leading a small team and standing behind a written guarantee on every job.
What is the total investment range to open a Calder Gate Repair location?
The all-in investment to open a Calder location, including the franchise fee, a fully stocked service vehicle, tools, opener inventory, and initial working capital, typically ranges from $250,000 to $400,000. The exact number depends on your market, real estate costs, and how many vehicles you launch with. Calder provides a detailed breakdown in the Franchise Disclosure Document so you can see where every dollar goes before you sign. We don’t work in loose estimates; you’ll get real numbers early in the process.
Does Calder offer financing or help with funding?
Calder does not provide direct financing, but we do work with franchise owners to build a funding plan. You’ll need to meet our minimum liquid capital and net worth requirements, which we’ll share in the first conversation. Many owners use SBA loans, home equity, or rollover funding from retirement accounts to cover the investment. We’ll point you to lenders who understand home services franchises, but the financing decision is yours. We never pretend funding is guaranteed or easier than it is.
Do I get an exclusive territory with my franchise?
Yes. Each Calder location owns a protected territory based on population and drive-time data, sized so there are enough gates to keep you busy without cannibalizing a neighboring owner. The territory is defined in your franchise agreement and typically covers a metro area or a cluster of suburban communities. Once it’s yours, it’s yours. We don’t sell overlapping territories to squeeze out extra fees.
How long does training take, and what does it cover?
Initial training runs two to three weeks, split between classroom-style learning and field time with an existing Calder operator. You’ll learn gate opener diagnostics, spring systems on steel and aluminum gates, control board replacement, safety edge installation, and how to run a job from first call to final invoice. Training also covers The Relay Standard: book in a tap with no phone tag, give a live arrival time instead of a four-hour window, send photos of the work before and after, put the price in writing before you start, and text a digital invoice the customer can pay from a link. We don’t send you out until you can explain a limit switch to a homeowner in plain words.
What ongoing fees or royalties does Calder charge?
Calder charges a royalty based on gross revenue, plus a technology fee that covers our booking, scheduling, and customer-tracking software. The exact percentages are in the FDD, and we’ll walk you through them on the first call. There are no surprise fees. The royalty is what funds the brand, the training updates, and the systems that let a customer track a technician to their door. You’ll see what you’re paying for every month in your profit and loss statement.
How long does it take from signing to opening my doors?
Most Calder owners open their doors within 90 to 120 days of signing the franchise agreement. That timeline includes securing your territory, completing training, ordering your vehicle wrap and inventory, and setting up your local phone number that routes to a live person 24/7. Market conditions and real estate can shift the number, but we don’t believe in letting a franchise sit on paper for a year. The goal is earning revenue, not waiting.
What support does Calder provide after I open?
Franchise owners get ongoing support that covers the parts of the business that usually sink a new owner. That includes marketing playbooks for local neighborhoods, help with hiring background-checked technicians, and a live support line for technical questions when a gate opener does something the manual doesn’t explain. The Relay Visibility Guarantee is the operating system, but the Calder team helps you run it. You’re not alone in a truck trying to figure out a Ghost Controls board on a Saturday.
Who is the ideal Calder franchise candidate?
The person who does well with Calder is comfortable being visible. You can’t hide behind a voicemail or a vague arrival window in this business. The ideal candidate is direct, follows a system, and believes a written price before any work starts is the only way to run a service company. You don’t need to be a master gate technician on day one, but you do need to care about showing up when you said you would. If that sounds obvious, you’re probably our kind of owner. If it sounds like a headache, this model isn’t for you.
What is the next step if I’m interested?
The next step is a phone call, not a 40-page application. Call (903) 417-0793 and you’ll speak to a live person who can answer your questions, walk through the investment range in plain numbers, and tell you if your background fits the Calder model before you invest another hour of your time. No pressure, no countdown timers, no ‘only two territories left’ nonsense. Just a straight conversation with someone who knows what it takes to run a Calder location.
Still Have Questions?
Franchise decisions deserve straight answers, not a sales script. Call (903) 417-0793 and talk to a real person, or submit the form below and we’ll call you back within one business day. No obligation, no pressure, just clear numbers and a candid conversation.
