BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

BFT welding and fabrication work in Los Angeles typically runs $275 – $650 installed, depending on whether we’re repairing a cracked gate frame, rebuilding a hinge mount, or fabricating a custom bracket for your opener arm. We stock BFT-compatible steel and aluminum stock on our trucks, and most welding repairs are done same-day once we’re on site. Owners usually discover the problem the hard way: the gate starts sagging, scrapes the driveway, or the BFT opener strains against a frame that’s twisted out of square. By the time the motor complains, the metal underneath has usually been failing for months.

We’re an independent gate repair company in Los Angeles, not affiliated with BFT. What that means for you: we work on BFT equipment every week and we match the metalwork to your specific model, not just whatever’s closest on the shelf.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT gate openers span three main lines we see across Los Angeles: the sliding-gate DEIMOS and IGEA series, the swing-arm PHOBOS and SUB series, and the older hydraulic KUSTOS units that are still running in a lot of mid-2000s installations. Each one stresses the gate frame differently. A DEIMOS on a 900-pound sliding gate puts constant lateral pressure on the rack mounts and the end stops. A PHOBOS swing arm flexes the hinge side of the frame every single cycle. The welding problem you have depends on which BFT model is bolted to which metal.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: BFT arms and brackets are manufactured to metric specs. The mounting bolt patterns on a PHOBOS N or PHOBOS LX don’t line up with standard SAE brackets you’d grab at a hardware store. When we fabricate a replacement bracket, we match the metric hole spacing exactly. If you’re not sure what you have, check the metal data plate on the opener body. It lists the model and serial on one line. Send us a photo of that plate when you call and we’ll tell you which bracket or reinforcement plate your frame needs before we roll out.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: BFT makes solid parts, but their fabricated steel accessories carry a long lead time and a premium price in Los Angeles. For most repairs, we use domestic steel cut and welded on-site to match BFT’s spec. It costs less, installs the same day, and outlasts the factory piece more often than not. The exceptions are motor-mount brackets and anything with a precision-ground surface. Those we order from BFT directly so the fit stays exact.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate sags on the latch side. The hinge posts or the weld where the hinge leaf meets the frame is cracking. You’ll see the gate drop a quarter inch or more over a few weeks. BFT openers will fight that extra friction until the motor burns out, so this is not a wait-and-see item.
  • The opener arm jerks instead of pivoting smoothly. That jerk usually means the bracket that anchors the arm to the gate has started to tear away from the frame. The weld stretches, the arm binds, and the BFT control board senses the overload and trips. Reset it enough times and you’re shopping for a new board.
  • You hear a grinding or dragging noise on every cycle. Sliding BFT gates in Los Angeles pick up sand and grit from dry months, which acts like sandpaper on the roller track. The track welds wear thin, the rollers chew into the steel, and the DEIMOS motor works harder every week. The sound you hear is metal on worn metal.
  • Rust blooms around the welds or the frame corners. Coastal Los Angeles air, sprinkler overspray, and dog urine near gate posts all accelerate corrosion at the exact places where stress concentrates. Once a weld rusts through, the frame is no longer a single rigid structure. You’ll see the gate wobble.
  • The gate stops mid-travel and the BFT control board throws a fault code. If the board shows an overload or torque fault and the gate isn’t visibly obstructed, the frame is often the culprit. Bent rails, twisted posts, or a cracked weld force the motor past its preset torque limit. The opener is trying to tell you the metal failed before the electronics did.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what BFT welding and fabrication work costs in Los Angeles, with the parts and labor broken out the way we quote them:

  • Weld repair (cracked frame, broken hinge, torn bracket): $275 – $425
  • Custom bracket fabrication for BFT arm mounts: $225 – $375
  • Gate frame reinforcement (gussets, cross-bracing, sag correction): $350 – $650
  • Full hinge replacement with new weld-on hinges: $300 – $550
  • Sliding gate track repair or replacement: $400 – $800

Every quote includes the steel or aluminum, welding consumables, grinding and cleanup, and the labor to get your BFT opener remounted and re-aligned. The written price you get before we start is the price on the invoice when we’re done. No surprise material charges, no hourly creep. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the weld fails or the bracket shifts within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge.

What drives the range is material thickness, access, and whether we need to remove the gate to weld it properly. A three-inch crack on a lightweight aluminum driveway gate is a quick fix. A sagging 16-foot steel gate with rusted-through posts takes half a day and a lot more metal. Call (903) 417-0793 and describe what you’re seeing. Nico or one of our techs will give you a real price range over the phone before anyone drives out.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a difference between inspecting and welding. You can absolutely check the hinge bolts, look for visible cracks, and watch for rust around the weld points. That information helps us quote the job faster. What you shouldn’t do is fire up a welder on a gate that’s under tension, especially a sliding gate with a BFT opener attached. The gate weighs hundreds of pounds. A bad weld on a load-bearing hinge fails catastrophically, and the gate can drop on someone, a car, or a pet. If the frame is cracked through, the gate needs to be blocked, supported, and often removed before we weld it. We bring the jacks, the clamps, and the experience to do that without the gate shifting mid-weld.

If you’re comfortable checking bolts and taking photos, do that. Send them over when you call (903) 417-0793. If the metal is cracked or the gate is sagging, let us handle the hot work. You’ll get a written price before we touch anything and a real guarantee behind every weld.
