FAAC Gate Motor Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock, match, and install FAAC-compatible gate motors across Los Angeles, with most replacements running $850 – $1,650 fully installed depending on your model and swing or slide configuration. Same-day replacement is available for most FAAC 400, 412, and 750 series units we carry on the truck. Most owners discover the motor has failed when the gate starts moving at half speed, stops mid-cycle, or makes a low grinding hum but doesn’t budge. If you’re standing in your driveway right now staring at a dead FAAC motor, here’s exactly what you need to know before spending a dollar.

Which FAAC Models This Applies To

We handle motor replacements across the FAAC lineup most common in Los Angeles residential and light-commercial gates: the 400 series (swing gates up to 12 feet), the 412 and 422 operators, the 750 and 760 slide-gate motors, and the older C720 and S418 models still running in neighborhoods from Woodland Hills to Whittier. FAAC tags its motors with a model plate on the side or underside of the operator housing. Before you call, snap a photo of that plate with your phone. The model number and serial prefix tell us which motor revision your gate actually has, which matters because a 412 motor from 2008 is not a drop-in match for a 412 motor from 2019. FAAC changed internal gearing specs between revisions without changing the outside housing.

For FAAC specifically, we lean toward OEM or FAAC-approved replacement motors over generic aftermarket. The hydraulic 400-series motors in particular are picky about fluid pressure and travel limits, and a cheap knockoff motor tends to burn out its bypass valve within a year in the heat we get in the San Fernando Valley. We can install a quality aftermarket unit in some slide-gate models where the motor is a standard-duty AC unit and the savings are real, and we’ll tell you up front which is which and why we’d pick one over the other for your gate.

Signs Your FAAC Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

Here’s what a dying FAAC motor actually looks like in the field, based on what we see across Los Angeles every week:

  • Gate moves at half speed or hesitates before starting. The start capacitor or the motor windings themselves are degrading, which is common after 8 – 12 years of daily cycles in Southern California heat.
  • Loud humming with no movement. The motor is getting power but the gear assembly or hydraulic pump isn’t engaging. On FAAC hydraulic units, this often means the pump is failing or the motor shaft coupler has worn smooth.
  • Gate stops mid-travel and reverses or just quits. The motor is overheating and tripping its internal thermal protection. It’ll work again after cooling down, but that pattern means the motor is near the end.
  • Burning smell near the operator housing. The windings are cooking. This is the one symptom that means stop using the gate immediately and kill the power at the breaker. A scorched FAAC motor is a fire risk, not just a broken opener.
  • Intermittent operation that tracks with nothing obvious. This is the one Nico Alvarez wrote the book on. In East LA, older FAAC units often have corroded internal connections that fail one day and work the next. By the time it’s intermittent like this, the motor brushes or relay contacts are usually the culprit, and patching it means more service calls than replacing the motor once.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Most FAAC gate motor replacements in Los Angeles run $850 – $1,650 installed, before any tax. That range covers the motor itself, removal of the failed unit, mounting and alignment, travel-limit setup, safety-edge and photocell reconnection, and a full cycle test. Where your job lands depends on three things: whether it’s a swing or slide gate, which FAAC model your gate has, and whether your existing brackets and control board can be reused. A 400-series hydraulic swing motor on a heavy iron gate in Hancock Park is a different job than a 750 slide motor on a rolling gate in Sun Valley.

You’ll get a written price before we touch anything. The number we quote is the number on the invoice, period. Every motor replacement carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair isn’t right, Calder returns and makes it right at no charge. We also include a free second visit if the replacement fails within the 365-day window.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do two things before calling: confirm the breaker hasn’t tripped, and check whether the gate moves manually using the release mechanism. That’s the extent of safe DIY on a FAAC motor. These units pack high-tension springs, a hydraulic pump moving fluid under pressure, and 120V or 240V wiring inside a metal housing. The 750-series slide motors especially involve chains and drive rails that can remove a finger if the gate releases under load. We don’t say this to scare you off. We say it because the emergency room visits from gate DIY happen most often with slide-gate hardware, and the real cost of a Saturday afternoon fix routinely exceeds the cost of having us do it right the first time.

If the motor is moving but slow, we can often diagnose over the phone and give you a firm quote. Tell me what it’s doing, and I’ll tell you what it’ll cost before I touch anything. Otherwise, call (903) 417-0793 and a live person answers. We’ll get a technician to your Los Angeles property with a trackable arrival time and the right motor on the truck.
