Gate Remote or Keypad Stopped Working

When your gate remote or keypad stops responding, the cause is almost always one of four things: a dead battery, a lost signal between the transmitter and the receiver, a tripped circuit or blown fuse at the control board, or a failed receiver module inside the opener unit itself. Most of these are fixed the same day a technician arrives.

Call (903) 417-0793

The frustrating part is that all four causes look identical from where you’re standing – the gate just doesn’t move. But a trained technician can usually narrow it down within the first few minutes on site, because each cause leaves a different set of clues: what the gate’s indicator lights are doing, whether the gate still responds to a hardwired wall button, and whether any controls work at all versus just one remote. That diagnosis is what shapes the repair, and it’s what we walk through below.

Why It Happens

Dead or Weak Batteries (Most Common)

Remote batteries drain slowly and then fail all at once, which is why this feels sudden even when it isn’t. If your gate opens fine from the keypad but not the remote – or vice versa – batteries in whichever device isn’t working are the first thing to rule out. A remote that worked yesterday but won’t today, with no other changes, is a battery until proven otherwise.

Lost Pairing Between Remote and Receiver

Gate openers learn their remotes through a programming process, and that pairing can drop after a power surge, a board reset, or – with some brands – simply over time. If fresh batteries don’t fix the remote, and the gate still moves when you press the wall button or use the keypad, the remote has probably lost its pairing with the receiver. LiftMaster, Viking, and FAAC units each have slightly different re-pairing procedures, and getting it wrong on the first attempt can lock you out of the programming mode entirely.

Tripped Circuit, Blown Fuse, or Board Reset

A power spike – from a storm, a utility fluctuation, or even a nearby lightning strike – can trip a breaker or blow the small fuse that protects the control board inside the opener. When this happens, every remote and every keypad stops working at the same time, because the receiver module has no power. If nothing responds and the gate’s indicator light is dark or blinking in an error pattern, this is the likely culprit. Do not attempt to access the control board yourself – the wiring inside carries live current and the board is sensitive to static discharge.

Failed Receiver Module or Control Board

The receiver module is the component that listens for your remote’s signal. Over several years of outdoor exposure – heat, humidity, rain infiltration – the module’s antenna or internal circuits can degrade. You’ll typically notice this as steadily shrinking range before it stops working entirely: a remote that used to trigger the gate from the street now only works at arm’s length, and then not at all. A failed board shows up differently – the gate may behave erratically, stop mid-travel, or produce error codes on the display panel. Both are hardware failures that require a technician to diagnose and replace the right component.

What to Do Right Now

  • Swap the batteries first. Use a fresh set, not batteries from another drawer that might also be low. Remote transmitters are typically CR2032 or AA – check the back of your remote for the size. If the keypad uses a 9-volt, replace that too while you’re at it.
  • Test every control one at a time. Try the remote, the keypad, and the hardwired wall button separately. Make a note of which ones respond and which don’t – this is the most useful information you can give a technician and it cuts the diagnosis time significantly.
  • Check your breaker panel. Look for any tripped breakers on the circuit that powers your gate opener. If a breaker is tripped, reset it once. If it trips again immediately, stop and call – that’s a wiring issue, not a breaker issue.
  • Photograph the control panel and any error lights. Before you touch anything else, take a clear photo of the opener’s status lights or display. Some boards cycle through error codes that clear themselves, and that photo gives the technician something to work from even if the display looks normal by the time they arrive.
  • Do not attempt to open the opener housing or access the control board. The wiring inside carries live current. If the board has been damaged by a power surge, there is no safe way to assess it without a meter and proper training. Leave the housing closed and let a technician handle it.

How We Fix It

When your local Calder Gate Repair technician arrives, the first thing they do is a full system diagnostic – not just the remote. They’ll test every control input, check the receiver signal strength, read any stored error codes on the board, and inspect the wiring connections at the control panel. That process usually takes fifteen to twenty minutes and produces a clear answer.

From there, the repair path depends on what the diagnostic finds. A lost pairing is re-established on the spot. A failed receiver module is replaced with a unit matched to your opener’s brand – our technicians are factory-familiar with LiftMaster, FAAC, BFT, Linear, Viking, Ghost Controls, DoorKing, Elite, and Mighty Mule, so they carry compatible parts for the openers they’re most likely to encounter. A damaged control board is quoted and replaced in the same visit when the part is available.

Before any of that work starts, you get a written price. That’s not a formality – it’s a requirement on every Calder job. The number on your invoice is the number you agreed to at the door. And every repair is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair isn’t right, we come back and make it right, free.
